V pesmi Dotik Angela Maya Angelou piše
Mi, nevajeni poguma
izgnani iz užitkov
živimo zviti v školjkah samote
dokler ljubezen ne zapusti svojega visokega svetega templja
in se pojavi
da nas osvobodi v življenje.
Ljubezen prispe
in v svojem vlaku pripelje ekstazo
stare spomine užitka
starodavno zgodovino bolečine.
Če pa smo drzni,
ljubezen odstrani verige strahu
z naših duš.
Odstavljeni od svoje plašnosti
V luči ljubezni
Si upamo biti pogumni
In nenadoma vidimo
Da nas ljubezen stane vse, kar smo
in kar kdaj-koli bomo.
Vendar je zgolj ljubezen tista,
ki nas osvobodi.

In the poem “Touched by an Angel,” Maya Angelou gets to the heart of what it means to love.
She writes:
We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love’s light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.
